The most discussed issue in our country right now is the status of women in India. India has come a long way from its pre independant/ independant period. But the staus of women is painfully the same, irrespective of rural or urban status. Few people tend to believe that Bharat, a name which is used to symbolise rural India, is safer and better than India, which is urban. This prestine ethos of Bharat is just a eye wash. Infact atrocities against women are endemic in Bharat especially to those belonging to lower caste. Even worse, in Bharat the women got used to live in such savagery for centuries that they had accepted the subjugation with any arguements. In India women tend to question the atrocities against them without the help of a male comrade.
Our country is deeply rooted in its patriarchial values. How much can we change this thought is a big questionmark? This mainly because the walls of our cultural framework is impervious. But i do wonder how does one who look down on women actually bend their head in front of our numerous female goddess/ celebrate festivals like Durga pooja. Our culture is extremily intricating and complex. It is usually twisted according to the needs of the dominant gender. So the only way to get equlity is fight against the dominant gender. But once you reach status quo with the dominant gender you try to hide behind the fraility of womanhood. One cannot travel in two boats at the same time.
